A six metre statue of Nelson Mandela stands at the centre of this piazza style square, built in the style of a European town square and renamed in his honour in 2004. It is attached directly to Sandton City, with restaurants and cafes spilling onto the square itself, a good spot for an evening out without needing to drive anywhere else.
Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square together form one of the largest retail complexes on the continent, several hundred stores including international brands alongside South African names like Woolworths and Exclusive Books, plus a Ster-Kinekor cinema if the shopping runs long.
A short drive away in Rivonia itself, Liliesleaf was the underground headquarters of the anti apartheid movement in the early 1960s, and the site of the police raid that led to Nelson Mandela's imprisonment. Now a museum, and one of the more meaningful stops in the area for anyone interested in the history behind the city.
The Johannesburg Botanical Garden and Delta Park both offer a genuine break from the towers and traffic, a rose garden, a lake, and walking paths, without leaving the northern suburbs.
